Dr Nelson Mandela is revered the world over as a great statesman and is cherished for working towards making a better life for all living in South Africa. This tour incorporates South Africa’s most spectacular scenery, wild life and provides an opportunity for you to walk in the footsteps of Mandela by visiting places that helped make him what today is regarded as a world icon. Day 1 On arrival in Cape Town International Airport, you will be met and private transfer to your hotel/guesthouse for a 3 nights stay (B). In the afternoon, transfer to Mandela Gateway at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront for your ferry trip to Robben Island for an in depth tour of the island and the prison.This once the notorius high-security prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated for 27 years. Step inside his Nelson Mandela's maximum-security prison cell No.5. Day 2: This morning, we travel along the scenic Atlantic Ocean coastline to Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Tour highlights include: penguin coolly at Boulder’s Beach, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Chapman’s Peak Drive, Simonstown and Muizenberg Day 3: This morning’s tour takes you directly to the cableway and up to Table Mountain (weather permitting), followed by a city tour. Rest of the afternoon at leisure. OPTIONAL TOURS available include: Township Tour, Wine Route Tour or Hermanus Whale watching tour Day 4: After breakfast, we travel via Du Toit’s Kloof Pass to Worcester. Visit the towns of Barrydale and Calitzdorp through the ever-changing semi desert areas to your luxurious hotel in Oudtshoorn. Day 5 After breakfast, visit the vast limestone Cango Caves for a fully guided tour and an ostrich farm. Time permitting, an optional tour of the Crocodile and Cheetah Park. Leave Oudtshoorn and continue to Mossel Bay. Visit the famous Post Office Tree and the Diaz and Maritime Museum. Scenic drive to Wilderness and on to South Africa’s ‘oyster capital’ Knysna. Overnight at the exclusive country hotel, in Knysna DAY 6 After breakfast, drive along the edge of the warm Indian Ocean with a short refreshment stop in the ‘millionaires’ playground of Plettenberg Bay. Enter the Tsitsikamma Forest area visiting the Big Tree and the Garden of Eden. Stop at Storms River Bridge – the world’s highest ‘bungee jump’. Continue to Port Elizabeth for your overnight stay in Port Elizabeth B+B. DAY 7 You will be collected from your hotel for a short orientation tour of the city and on to New Brighton Township. Here we visit the Museum of Struggle against apartheid. Lunch at the local tavern. After lunch we depart for Amakhala Game Reserve for your two nights stay. (All meals+ two reserve activities per day) DAY 8 Morning and evening game drives with experienced ranger and tracker. Feel the heartbeat and rhythm of Africa, as you become part of a Big 5 Safari Adventure. DAY 9 After breakfast, we depart for Alice with a stop over in Grahamstown- the “City of Saints” for lunch. We arrive in Alice early afternoon. We visit Fort Hare University (Fort Hare University is the alma matter of some of Africa’s greatest leaders including Nelson Mandela, OR Tambo, Mangosuthu Buthelezi and Robert Mugabe. There are archives of the Liberation Movement the PAC and the African National Congress. We later depart for King Williams Town and stop over at the Steve Biko Garden of Remembrance. Continue to East London and overnight at a hotel in the area. DAY 10 After breakfast, we leave East London and continue to Coffee Bay in time for lunch. After lunch we proceed to Mthatha and overnight. DAY 11 In Mthatha, we will spend the day following the early footstep of Nelson Mandela’s youth years. We visit Nelson Mandela Museum at the Bhunga Building where you will find his “Long Walk to Freedom” in his own words exhibition. We visit Qunu-his childhood home, the church where he was baptized and received the name “Nelson”. We also visit the sliding rock in which he played as a young boy. We then proceed to the spiritual Mvezo, his birthplace and where his umbilical cord is buried. In his biography “Long Walk to Freedom” where he spent the happiest moments of his childhood. We also visit an open-air museum to see Madiba’s (as he is affectionately known) humble beginnings. Traverse this unspoilt beautiful region en route to Port St Johns, situated at Umzimvubu Rive mouth. Surrounded by towering cliffs, pristine beaches and indigenous forests- this is region is truly South Africa’s “Best Kept Secret” Overnight at Port St Johns DAY 12 After breakfast, head back to Port Elizabeth via East London arriving in the afternoon. Drop off at Port Elizabeth Airport for your flight to Cape Town International Airport or OR International Airport to connect with your international flight back home.
